Lightning can't stop East Cobb
By ALEX KANTECKI - akantecki@nwherald.com
WOODSTOCK On Thursday, the Woodstock Lightning hoped to do something no other team in this year's Continental Amateur Baseball Association World Series had done: beat the East Cobb Astros.
But like the six teams that lost to the Astros earlier in the tournament, Woodstock couldn't crack the three-time defending 15-year-old champs from Marietta, Ga. East Cobb won, 8-0, in six innings at Dream Field in Emricson Park.
“We wanted to come out here and shock some people,” said Tyler Hickey, who led off the game with an infield single. “It stinks to lose any game, but when you're playing against one of the best teams in the country, it's going to be an uphill battle.”
East Cobb has won four of the past five 15U CABA championships. The Astros have produced 150 professional players in the past 20 years, including Cubs outfielder Marlon Byrd and White Sox infielder Gordon Beckham, according to the team's website.
Jordan Turner, who pitched all six innings for Woodstock, said facing East Cobb was different.
“I had a little bit more energy, and I think the whole team was feeling the same way,” Turner said.
Lighting coach Mike Turner said he was proud of his team for sticking close to the Astros through the first five innings.
Woodstock trailed 2-0 after three, 3-0 after four and 4-0 after five.
“My guys came out and matched [the Astros] pitch for pitch,” Turner said. “I'll take a 3-0 game after four innings against East Cobb any day.”
As 14-year-olds in last year's tournament, the Lightning played East Cobb and lost, 10-1. Scoring a run last year??s gave them confidence, Hickey said.
“We knew we could come out today and give them a good fight,” Hickey said. “We believed in ourselves and our teammates, and we still do.”
That's what coach Turner told his players before the game. “I emphasized to them that we belonged on the same field with [the Astros] and we were here to win,” Turner said. “.... We had chances early on and if we got a few of those runners in, it changes the face of the game.”
Thursday was the end of the road for Woodstock in the tournament. They lost their next game against the Northern Knights, 8-1.
